Five days of climbing at The CRUX at Camptown. Great new skills learned. Invaluable life lessons learned. That is how we would summarize climb club here at Camptown.
The CRUX at Camptown hosted six groups this year for what we called “Climb Clubs.” Climb Clubs were a partnership with other youth serving nonprofits here in Indy designed to allow youth opportunities to explore bouldering and grow in life skills. Six individual club units from The Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis participated in these climb clubs.
A basic layout for club was spread out over five days. Day one saw youth learning about the basics of safety when bouldering. Days two through four taught them various dynamics of climbing such as foot/hand movement, balance, hold types, and more. The final day was a celebration of everything they had learned throughout the course of the program.
We strive to teach more than just climbing skills here at The CRUX at Camptown. Every program incorporates some type of hard or soft skill. In the case of climb clubs, each day had a theme tied to the curriculum. One day we would focus on teaching the concept of “grit” with climbing. The next we would teach “teamwork.” When we coupled climbing skills and real examples of how to use these concepts, we found students had an easy time visualizing and remember how to use these “soft” skills in real life.
